Die Ursprünge des Amtshauses reichen vermutlich bis ins 13. Jahrhundert zurück, als die Elbe eine zentrale Rolle als Verkehrs- und Handelsroute spielte. Aufgrund seiner Lage an der Grenze zwischen den Herzogtümern Braunschweig-Lüneburg und Brandenburg war Schnackenburg von strategischer Bedeutung. Das Amtshaus diente in dieser Zeit als Sitz des Vogts, der die Verwaltung der Region übernahm und die Interessen des jeweiligen Landesherren vertrat.

Das heutige Amtshaus wurde nach dem großen Stadtbrand von 1728 im Jahr 1734 neu errichtet und ursprünglich als Zollhaus genutzt. Neben der Erhebung des Elbzolls war das Gebäude gleichzeitig Verwaltungssitz des ehemaligen Amtes Schnackenburg.

Das Amt Schnackenburg war ein historisches Verwaltungsgebiet, das zunächst zum Fürstentum Lüneburg und später zum Königreich Hannover gehörte. Im Jahr 1850 wurde es aufgelöst und mit der bisherigen Amtsvogtei Gartow zum neuen Amt Gartow-Schnackenburg zusammengelegt. Ab 1853 wurde dieses schließlich nur noch als Amt Gartow bezeichnet.

Nach der Abschaffung des Elbzolls im Jahr 1866 ging das Anwesen in den Besitz der Familie von Bernstorff über. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Amtshaus erneut als Zollamt genutzt und bot zugleich der Wasserschutzpolizei Unterkunft. Von hier aus wurden Kontrollen auf der Elbe durchgeführt, die hier bis 1989 die innerdeutsche Grenze markierte.

Nach der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands im Jahr 1990 verlor das Zollamt seine Funktion, und das Gebäude ging in privaten Besitz über. Heute wird es als Wohnhaus genutzt.

Das Amtshaus steht unter Denkmalschutz und ist ein wichtiger Teil des kulturellen Erbes der Region. The origins of the "Amtshaus" (administrative building) likely date back to the 13th century, when the Elbe played a central role as a transport and trade route. Due to its location on the border between the Duchies of Brunswick-Lüneburg and Brandenburg, Schnackenburg held strategic importance. During this period, the building served as the seat of the "Vogt" (bailiff), who managed the region's administration and represented the interests of the respective sovereign.

The current building was erected in 1734 - following the great town fire of 1728 - and was originally used as a customs house. In addition to the collection of Elbe tolls, the building served as the administrative headquarters for the former "Amt" (administrative district) of Schnackenburg.

The "Amt" of Schnackenburg was a historic administrative district that belonged first to the Principality of Lüneburg and later to the Kingdom of Hanover. It was dissolved in 1850 and merged with the existing "Amtsvogtei" (bailiwick) of Gartow to form the new "Amt" of Gartow-Schnackenburg; from 1853 onwards, it was known simply as the "Amt" of Gartow.

Following the abolition of the Elbe toll in 1866, the property passed into the ownership of the von Bernstorff family. After World War II, the building once again served as a customs office and also housed the river police. From this location, patrols were conducted on the Elbe, which marked the inner-German border here until 1989.

After German reunification in 1990, the customs office ceased operations, and the building passed into private ownership. Today, it serves as a private residence.

The building is a listed historic monument and a significant part of the region's cultural heritage.
