Evangelical city church um 1880

A church existed on this site at least since 1262 (first documented mention), which was destroyed in the town fire of 1634. 

The successor building stood only a few decades - it burned down in 1692. However, in both destructions the choir from the 15th century remained intact. The reconstruction of the church was probably done too hastily - during the 18. Repairs were necessary again and again throughout the twentieth century. Around the middle of the 19. Then, at the end of the 19th century, the decay could no longer be stopped and a new building had become unavoidable. 

Finally, in 1884, the fundamental renovation could be started. On October 7, 1888, the new church was solemnly consecrated. 

The Lutheran town church is a neo-Gothic church of the
19. Century with some older parts. Inside, the crucifix from 1655 and the stained glass windows in the late Gothic choir from the 19. and 20. Century. Noteworthy is the stone plaque on the right side of the southern entrance. Amazingly, it survived destruction, fire and the demolition of the church and commemorates a renovation under the famous Calw Dean Johann Valentin Andreä in 1627. In the inscription "Kalwensi tempo deus ipse est fautor et autor" (God himself is the patron and builder of the Calw church), some letters were curiously designed as large letters ("kaLVVensI teMpLoDeVs Ipse est faVtor et aVtor"). If these are read as Roman numerals and added together, the result is the number 1627, the year of the renovation. The inscription continues: "In the year of Christ 1627 at Frielingszeitten diße Kirchen erweiterttert mit mehr Fenstern erleuchtet worden und zu beßerer Bequemligkeit der Zuhörer zurichten worden". May God continue to grant his word and give him a place to stay. Also, protect against internal and external hostility and harm in a paternal way. Amen."
