Georg-Büchner-Platz 1987

Georg-Büchner-Platz, forecourt of the State Theatre

Georg-Büchner-Platz in front of the Staatstheater Darmstadt used to be a garden. In 1972, the square was changed by the construction of the Staatstheater and its underground car park, as well as by the installation of the "Grande Disco", a free-standing bronze sculpture by Arnold Pomodoro. The architect Arno Lederer redesigned Georg-Büchner-Platz in 2009 with a wide set of steps made of concrete and grass strips, flanked by rows of trees and mushrooms made of white concrete, which cover the entrances to the underground car park.

The Staatstheater Darmstadt is a four-section theatre with music and dance theatre, drama and concerts. The theatre is not only located on Georg-Büchner-Platz but also in the neighbourhood of Ludwigskirche and Mollerhaus. When it was completed in 1972 according to plans by architect Rolf Prange, it was one of the first theatres in Germany to combine stages, workshops and administration under one roof.
