Gigelberg, Gigel Tower

On Gigelberg stands the Gigel Tower, where the Gigelmann used to carry out his duties. Would you like to know the story behind it?

The two towers on Gigelberg, the square Gigel Tower and the round structure of the White Tower, connected by the parapet with its watchtower, still define the town's skyline today. The Gigel Tower, likely built around 1140, is the oldest of all Biberach towers. 'Gigel' means 'summit'. The Gigelmann, who performed his duties at the town's highest point, was responsible for signaling the hours with his horn and sounding the alarm in times of war and fire.

For those interested, you can take a look at the plateau behind the Gigelberg in addition to our guided tour through the passage of the watchtower to Hirschgraben. Hirschgraben was excavated by hand at the beginning of the 14th century to use the stones for building the town walls.
