House Schüz um 1915

This house has an amazing past

At the beginning of the 19th century, the physician Johann Georg Zahn commissioned the court architect Reinhard Fischer to build a representative residential building.

Fischer had already built Johann Martin Vischer's magnificent palace, Haus Reichert and the Hotel Waldhorn in Calw a few years earlier.

The Zahns Palace was built in 1813/14. As an inheritance, the house later went to the Schüz family. Calw owes a special feature to a member of this family, the physician Emil Schüz: since 1871, he had many types of trees planted in the area behind the Georgenäum, in today's Stadtgarten, thus creating one of the first nature trails.

Today, the house on the market square houses the Hermann Hesse Museum (expected to be closed until 2024 due to renovations) with one of the most extensive collections of exhibits on the life and work of the world-famous writer.
