Nikolaus Bridge um 1920

Insiight into the former city life

The St. Nicholas Bridge and St. Nicholas Chapel are considered landmarks of Calw. The stone bridge and the Gothic chapel were built around 1400.

Cars still drove on the St. Nicholas Bridge until the 1970s. When the traffic became too dense and people feared for the old structure, a new connection across the Nagold was created, the Marktbrücke. This relieved the burden on the St. Nicholas Bridge. Until 100 years ago, the raftsmen could be seen from the bridge doing their hard and exhausting work: they maneuvered rafts of ten to 15 logs (a log is tied together from six to eight trunks) through this bottleneck, i.e. rafts of about 100 logs and a length of 150 to 200 meters.
