On the largest square in Darmstadt's city centre, the Ludwig Monument stands amidst the hustle and bustle. It is popularly known as "Langer Ludwig" (Long Ludwig) and commemorates Grand Duke Ludewig I. On the north side is the 18th-century Kollegiengebäude, which is now the seat of the Regional Council.

Tip: From April to October, the "Lange Lui" is always open on the first Saturday of the month. 172 steps lead to the viewing platform, from which you have a great view over Darmstadt's city centre at a height of 30.04 metres.
