The castle of the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt and the Grand Dukes of Hesse and by Rhine developed from a moated castle. The castle museum is located in the bell building and the German-Poland-Institute is based in the western wing.

Today the castle belongs to the Technical University of Darmstadt. As a public green area, the castle moat invites visitors to linger. In particular, the "Schlossgarten" beer garden on the bastion of the castle offers a relaxed atmosphere in summer.
