Since its elevation to the status of a city in 1330, Darmstadt's weekly and annual markets have been held on the oldest square - as well as the weekly market and festivals such as the Heinerfest or the Christmas market even today.

On the south side stands the Old Town Hall in Renaissance style. Today you can enjoy a beer of the "Darmstädter Ratskeller Hausbrauerei" in the Ratskeller and get married in the left part. The market fountain was the city's only public water supply until the 16th century. Together with the Ratskeller, the Darmstadt Showmen's Association has been taking care of the annual flower decoration of the market square fountain for many years.
