Karolinenplatz
Since 1975, Karolinenplatz has been named after Karoline Henriette Landgravine of Hesse-Darmstadt, the wife of Hereditary Prince Ludwig IX. Today, the square hosts flea markets and also the Schlossgrabenfest music festival, among other things. The neo-classical building on the square was opened in 1819 as a court theatre according to plans by Georg Moller. With seats for almost 2,000 spectators, Grand Duke Ludewig I wanted to make the opera accessible to a wide audience. After the destruction of the building during the war in September 1944, it was no longer used as an opera house.
Today, it houses numerous archives, including the City Archives of Darmstadt and the Hessian State Archives.
