Land Surveying Office um 1972
The building to your right, with its neoclassic façade, was constructed as a tax office in 1907.
Its noble architecture with pillars and a triangular pediment reflects the acquired self-confidence of the town’s citizenship, who, in the nineteenth century, had furthered their wealth with winegrowing and brisk trade between Freiburg and Basel.
In 1810, when Müllheim received its town charter, the town had 1,700 inhabitants, growing to 3,000 by 1900.
The picturesque turret in Florentine style on top of the neighbouring building also illustrates a consciousness for prestige: in 1867, Müllheim needed a new town hall, and the Square of the Old Wine Press proved to be a prime site.
The “town gate” that solitarily occupies the square is a sculpture that was unveiled in 2000.
