Post Office um 1950
Let’s continue further west on Werderstraße to enjoy the view of the Alsatian Vosges mountain range on a clear, dry day.
Even after various modifications and extensions, the building now housing the post office still bears stylistic architectural features that characterised the rising self-confidence of the upper classes in the early 1900s – it was built by Hans Blankenhorn in 1908.
The Reichspost (“Imperial Mail Service”) first rented the building in 1913, then bought it in 1924. In order to create a link between the increasingly vivid Werderstraße and the old Hauptstraße, an already existing alleyway was widened in 1886 to become “Friedrichstraße”.
In 1910, the Volksbank Müllheim, founded in 1874, moved into a representative new building there. Until then, its banking transactions had taken place in the private apartments of the respective tellers.
In 1968, the Volksbank Müllheim moved into yet another building along Werderstraße.
