I was four years old when it was erected as a hospital in 1847. My uncle Nikolaus, a reeve, had donated 200 guilders for its construction – quite a fair sum.

He could have better used it a year later when German revolutionary Gustav Struve, on his way to Staufen, extorted money from Müllheim’s notables, who thus bought themselves out from having to fight for the German republic. They charged him 1,000 guilders.
