Heroes Commemoration Day 1938

In the corner of this photo, you see tree branches. Admittedly, the old lime tree has in the meantime given way to a younger one that was planted at the same spot in 2001.

The view towards Werderstraße has not changed much over the years. Many old façades and pediments still prevail. What has changed, though, is the ensemble at the corner to Werderstraße:

The Großherzogliche Realschule - “Grand-ducal Secondary School” - that was built in 1847 and housed the NSDAP district headquarters during the Nazi era, was destroyed in 1945 by a bomb. This representative spot now neighbours a modern residential and business building.

The Volksschule - primary school - was located on the other, northern side of Werderstraße.
