Wilhelmstraße 1980
The cause for this sculpture was the transition of the major traffic axis Wilhelmstraße into a pedestrian zone.
It was designed by artist Bernd Völkle and crafted by stonemason Johannes Abel.
When I was a boy, I played with this kind of toy blocks, because in those times, neoclassic elements were quite in vogue in the architecture of representative public buildings and as symbols of prestige and wealth.
So the façade of the old tax office found a meaningful counterpart in the modern town gate sculpture. In fact, Müllheim never had town walls or gates.
