Guardian Angel House um 1900
In 1737, the Kirchstraße 2 plot at the Oberer Markt was passed from Adam Ahrweiler to the Councillor Engelbert Clasen (1703-1768). Clasen erected this attractive - to this day unaltered - half-timbered house. He came from one of the leading families of Unkel. His father, Johannes Clasen, as well as he and his brothers repeatedly held offices such as builder, mayor and juror. His son Henrich (1732-1793) continued the family tradition. The building is still owned by descendants of the Clasen family. The relief of the guardian angel on the front of the house gave the building its name, although the statue of the Madonna on the corner of the house is much more striking. The holy guardian angel says:
„Will you hurry away with me dear child, you have to follow the commandment.” The child answers: „Yes my angel, now I am ready to ascend with you to the heavenly kingdom.“
