Rheinstraße 11 /Lammgasse 1931
My name is Elaine Wolff, and I live in New York. When I visit Breisach, I think of the many stories that my friend Hans David Blum has told me!
This photo shows Karl Dreyfuss' textile shop on Lammgasse.
Karl, Leopold and Julius Dreyfuss were brothers who had textile shops in the town centre since 1900. You couldn't imagine the Breisach business world without them. Julius had a shop in Kupfertorstraße. Leopold's shop was directly on the market square. On an old postcard you can see his shop for men's and boys' clothing with the advertisement: Made to measure! "All men's items in stock".
The fourth brother, Max, ran his own sparkling water manufactory. Today, you can see one of his water bottles in the Blue House!
The sons of the Dreyfuss brothers also became merchants. Ludwig Dreyfuss, one of Max's sons, was one of the three Breisachers who returned after the Second World War. He's buried next to his wife in the New Jewish Cemetery like his father and his grandfather.
The Breisachers who fled Nazi persecution and came to New York stayed in close contact. In New York, my mother Paula often had weekend visits with Ellen Dreyfuss, Karl's daughter, who grew up in this house.
