Neutorstraße 7 1928
My name is Elaine Wolff and I live in New York. When I visit Breisach, I think of the many stories that my friend Hans David Blum has told me!
We're standing in Neutorstrasse in front of a house that was built during the reconstruction of Breisach after 1945. Before 1933, this street was called Neugasse, and this is where the St Lorenz Inn used to be. It belonged to the Günzburger family for 63 years, until 1912. Lippmann Günzburger ran it for many years with his wife Helene. In 1840, Lippmann became president of the Jewish community in Breisach, and he held that position for 32 years. On the part of the property that opens onto Richard-Müller-Straße, he built a small brewery, which was later run by his son Heinrich.
At that time, Breisach had many inns, particularly on Neugasse. Soldiers were quartered there, and there was a lot of drinking, especially beer. The Günzburger brewery was one of the small establishments, and it had a good reputation. The brewer Ulmann and the Bercher brewery made most of the beer. The Franz and Dienst breweries and the "Zum Kreuz" inn were on Neutorplatz.
