Judengasse (Jewish Lane) 1937

JUDENGASSE (JEWISH LANE) BREISACH

My name is Hans David Blum and I grew up on this street, the Judengasse or Jewish lane. This photo was taken by Heinz Bähr on a Shabbat in 1937. It shows people leaving the synagogue after the Saturday morning service, wearing fine clothing. At the very back of the picture is our community hall.

Jews were allowed to settle here on the northern edge of Münsterberg Hill around 1648. That was after the Thirty Years' War. They came to Breisach in the service of the French army as cattle and horse traders. The Jewish community grew, and it became a small neighbourhood of its own. It wasn't easy: Jews needed permission to live here, and each family had to pay "protection money", a kind of tax.

In 1697, Breisach once again became part of Austria – the borders were constantly changing. Shortly afterwards, Josef Günzburger was able to use his ingenuity and influence with the margrave to reach an agreement that allowed Jewish communities to be founded in seven other locations on the Upper Rhine. He was so wealthy that he could pay the "protection money" for everyone! His grave is in Mackenheim in Alsace.

When I grew up here in the 1920s, the Judengasse was full of life: Shops selling food and household goods, a butcher's shop, a baker, a flour and grain shop, textile and leather goods shops, a grocer's shop and a wholesale wool and linen shop. There were three inns here: the Bären, the Adler and, at Kupfertorplatz, the Goldene Schiff.

The old people sat and chatted on benches in front of the houses.  When school was out, we children played in the street or in the gardens.
