Georgenäum um 1871
The building is named after its donors, the Royal Dutch Consul General Emil von Georgii-Georgenau and Sophie Emilie Georgii, daughter of the Württemberg Finance Minister Gärttner.
Georgii-Georgenau was born in 1820 in Calw, his mother came from the important Calw family Doertenbach. The founders wanted to raise the general education of the citizens of Calw and gave them the Georgenäum as an educational institution. At the same time, they provided for the maintenance of the institution by means of a foundation. The building was inaugurated in 1871. The library in the house was equipped with an initial stock of 745 books. Lectures were offered in the large hall, and the conversation and reading rooms were open to all. The drawing and modeling school was incorporated into the Georgenäum, and a little later also the women's work school. Today, the Aurelius Boys' Choir, which is known far beyond the city limits of Calw, has its home here.
