Salzkasten 1937
In 1696 the salt house was rebuilt. From the 15th century until 1807, the Württemberg official towns had the task of supplying the population with salt. In Calw, the "white gold" was stored in the "salt box" behind the town hall, where the council clerk's office was also located. Since 1730 a private Calw trading company had the privilege of salt trading. Initially under the management of Martin Notter and later, with interruptions, under that of his son, the company had the right to import salt from Bavaria to Württemberg. Johann Martin Notter Jr. died in 1802 as one of the richest men in the Duchy of Württemberg with an estate of 750,000 gulden.
