House Schaber um 1940
in 1697, five years after the construction of the present building at Marktplatz 6, a merchant moved in here - and trading house it has remained to this day. It became particularly famous as the birthplace of Hermann Hesse.
Hermann Hesse was born here on Monday, July 2, 1877, at 6:30 p.m. in the apartment on the second floor.
In 1882, the former residential and business premises of the colonial goods merchant Emil Dreiß became the textile store Traugott Schiler, and later the textile store Friedrich Daur. Today in it is the fashion house Schaber.
The parents, Johannes and Marie Hesse, have lived in this apartment since their marriage in 1874. In the years 1873 - 1881 Johannes Hesse is an employee of his father-in-law Hermann Gundert in the Calwer Verlagsverein, which publishes Christian writings. On August 15, 1875, Hesse's older sister Adele (1875- 1949) was born here. Hermann Hesse is baptized in the house by his grandfather Hermann Gundert on August 3, 1877. Another three siblings were born here: Paul (14.07.1878- 17.12.1878), Gertrud (06.08.1879-30.03.1880) and Marie, called Marulla (27.11.1880 - 17.03.1953). The Hesse family lived on the second floor of this house until 1881. Hermann Hesse was born here on July 2, 1877. He spent his childhood and youth in Calw and repeatedly mentioned the town of his birth in his works. The Hermann Hesse Museum, with many documents and objects related to the life and work of the Nobel Prize winner in literature, is located just a few steps away in Haus Schüz on Oberer Marktplatz (closed until probably 2024).
