Stonehouse

View of the Stonehouse

Still under the impression of the devastating city fire in 1692, which destroyed all wooden buildings in Calw, the partner of the Zeughandlungscompagnie Johannes Schill began in 1694 with the construction of the stone house with fireproof vaults made of stone. Because his business trips took him to Bolzano, among other places, he had developed a preference for the South Tyrolean architectural style over time. He now had his house built in this style.

Via the Weinsteg you get back to the left side of the Nagold. The name of the footbridge goes back to the transport of wine between the wine cellars on the right side of the Nagold and the wine shops or inns on the other side of the river. The path from the Weinsteg to Ledergasse leads past a number of high-water markers, which clearly show the full extent of the floods that used to recur regularly. After a devastating flood in 1947 kept Calw in suspense for days, the Nagold was regulated from 1948 onwards in the hope of getting rid of the water. But even today, the danger of the Nagold overflowing its banks has not been finally averted.
