House Schnaufer um 1920
This stately and probably most beautiful half-timbered house in Calw was built in 1694, two years after the devastating town fire. The craftsmanship bears witness to the high level of skill of the carpenters, but also to the wealth of the builder, Johann Jakob Schill. He owed his prosperity to his family's affiliation with the Calwer Zeughandlungscompagnie.
in 1751, the building was sold to members of the Zahn and Doertenbach families, two other families of the Calw Compagnie. In an annex behind the house, the buyers tried their hand at the new profession of porcelain production in the second oldest porcelain manufactory in Württemberg. However, the Calw manufactory was abandoned after five years - despite all efforts, the technical difficulties could not be overcome. The Duke's porcelain privilege and the only preserved product of this manufactory, a plate, can be admired in the Palais Vischer, Museum of the City of Calw. The large sign hanging in full splendor in front of the building provides information about the predominant later use of the house: grapes and grape leaves as motifs refer to the winery that was located here until 1975 and operated by the Schnaufer family.
