House Engerstraße 20 um 1975

Oldest half-timbered house in the Lower Rhine region

Behind the modern façade, added in the late 20th century, lies what is believed to be the oldest half-timbered house not only in Kempen, but in the entire Lower Rhine region.

This two-storey residential and commercial building is a classic example of post-and-beam construction and, based on architectural analysis, dates to the 15th century. A restored section of the original half-timbered façade remains visible along the adjacent alleyway.

Distinctive firebreaks between neighbouring houses were designed to limit the spread of flames in the event of a fire, while also helping to channel rainwater from adjoining roofs into the street gutters.

Like many properties on Engerstraße, the building was adapted in the 19th century to accommodate a shop. These changes significantly altered the original room layouts and proportions, reflecting the commercial transformation of the street during that period.
