Hall House

Built in 1764 by Kempen master builder Friedrich Vogts for his friend Peter Matthias Hall, this residence is closely linked to the town’s industrial heritage. Hall had established a wax bleaching factory here two decades earlier, which grew into Kempen’s oldest large-scale enterprise: the Franz Theodor Foerster candle factory.

This distinguished 18th-century bourgeois townhouse comprises three floors topped with a converted mansard roof. The façade is organised into five bays and is horizontally divided by two plaster cornices between the floors, with a more prominent cornice crowning the eaves.

The cheerful Rococo style of the period is clearly visible in the elegant curves of the door frame and the intricately carved oak door, adorned with Baroque elements, considered one of the finest in Kempen.

Although the ground-floor windows were later enlarged, this alteration has only slightly affected the façade’s original charm. At the end of the 20th century, the building’s core was rebuilt, while the façades and door were carefully preserved in their original condition.

Between 1975 and 1982, Haus Hall was home to the much-loved Café Muckefuck, a popular gathering place where many local schoolchildren and students spent their leisure time.
