House Acker 1

Kempen has always maintained strong political and social ties with its surrounding region, and local noble families often held considerable influence in the town. House Acker 1 is thought to have served as the urban residence of such a nobleman.

In the mid-17th century, it likely belonged to a prominent branch of the Lords of Virmond, whose main seat was at Neersen Castle but who also had close connections with Kempen.

Like much of the town’s fortifications, the house was probably damaged during the Hessian occupation (1642–1649). Wall anchors indicate that it was renovated in 1657. At this time, a low third storey was added, replacing what is believed to have been a battlement.

During restoration works in the 1970s, a vaulted cellar was uncovered. Within it lay a small brick-built chamber hidden beneath the vaulting – most likely intended to safeguard valuables from looting during unsettled times.

House Acker 1 is also notable as the birthplace of Kempen’s honorary citizen Peter Kother (1878–1962), whose father operated a smithy here.
