Ludowigs House

This house was built in 1789 by the merchant Franz Lambertz, its style reminiscent of the Horten family house on Kuhstraße. Around 1800, Lambertz served as mayor of Kempen under French administration.

Heavy pack carts once passed through the large gate into the courtyard. The upper window lintels feature delicate Rococo decorations from the era of French King Louis XVI (1774–1792), similar to those on the Horten House.

During restoration work around 1980, the ground-floor windows were returned to their original size, restoring the building’s harmonious appearance.

In the 19th century, the house came into the possession of the Ludowigs merchant family, who had moved from Cologne and owned extensive land in the south-west of the town, in the Hessenring/Wiesenstraße area. The house takes its name from this respected and wealthy family.

After the Second World War, the building housed the offices of the Konsum cooperative. Since the rebuilding and extension of the Kolpinghaus in 1981, it has served as a hotel, event venue, and restaurant.
