Peter Tower
The Peterturm is all that remains of the Petertor, the gate that once led to St. Peter’s Chapel, the oldest church in the Kempen region.
In 1980, the foundations of the now-demolished parallel tower were uncovered and rebuilt. Between the two towers once stood a front gate, which connected via a bridge to the main gate.
The Peter Tower was probably constructed at the end of the 15th century. An inscription dated 1522 likely marks a later repair.
In the 19th century, the Petertor was demolished to make way for new traffic routes under the Prussian administration. The west tower was preserved due to the high cost of demolition and was sold to a local innkeeper.
Tip: Diagonally to your left, a display case shows a detailed model of the former Peter Gate, clearly illustrating the structure of the old town fortifications.
