Garden house

During the lively Rococo period, when much social life took place at home, beautifully designed garden houses became popular. Wealthy citizens built these small pleasure houses as places to enjoy their gardens.

Typically, the ground floor was used to store tools, while the first-floor windows offered a view of the garden, where the family could relax over coffee and cake.

The enclosed design of this particular cottage suggests it was primarily used as a tool store rather than a leisurely retreat. Nevertheless, it stands as an architectural monument from the late 18th century.

After the dilapidated city wall was demolished, the newly reclaimed land was divided in 1773–74 to create the so-called moat gardens.

Rubble from the old city wall was used to fill the inner moat, whose course can still be seen today as a depression in the green space.

These plots were auctioned to citizens as fruit and vegetable gardens, with the proceeds contributing to the assets of the neighbouring street district.
