White Tower

Before us rises the White Tower, a little over 40 meters tall. Completed in 1484, this round sibling of the Gigel was a status symbol. As a wealthy town, Biberach could afford to paint the late Gothic brick building white.

Its round shape, with walls tapering upwards, three meters thick, favored its function as a defensive tower and made it a desirable target for siege cannons. Besides serving as a defensive tower, the White Tower also functioned as a prison from 1819 onwards.

With the White Tower, the medieval town fortifications were complete. This included 24 small turrets, bay windows, and four town gates in all directions. They disappeared during the 19th century, leaving only the Ulmer Tor, which still stands today, as a reminder of the grandeur of the old imperial town.
