Step right in and feel welcomedby the Mitwitz Moated Castle! With its history spanning around 800 years, the castle has witnessed turbulent times and numerous owners.

In the Middle Ages, it was initially owned by the Lords of Schaumberg and Rosenau. During the Peasants' War in the 16th century, the castle was severely damaged but later rebuilt by Hans Veit I of Würtzburg into the stately form we see today.

The portrait depicts Baroness Annie von Würtzburg, née Lyons. In honor of her maiden name, her son Ludwig had a stone lion erected at the entrance to Mitwitz in 1907—13 years after the passing of his beloved mother.

In 1922, her son, Reichsrat Ludwig Freiherr von Würtzburg, passed away without a male heir, marking the end of the noble Würtzburg lineage. The moated castle then came into the possession of the von Cramer-Klett family. Today, the entire castle complex belongs to the district of Kronach, to ensure permanent public access.

Take the opportunity to explore the castle's chambers! Join a guided tour to learn fascinating details about the castle and its former inhabitants. And who knows? You might even encounter the castles ghost!
