Upper Castle

A dispute between brothers leads to reconstruction

The story of the Upper Castle shows that a dispute between siblings does not only have to cause things to break, but can also lead to something beautiful being created.

The Upper Castle was likely built in the Middle Ages as a fortress and was heavily damaged in the 17th century during the Thirty Years' War by raids from the population of Kronach. Only the cellar with the foundation walls and remnants of the ground floor with its ribbed vaults survived.

However, when Johann Ludwig von Würtzburg had to leave the water castle in 1713 due to a dispute with his brothers, the restoration of the manor house could be undertaken. At that time, it took on its present form in the style of an Italian villa.

Around 1878, Baron Ludwig von Würtzburg, who temporarily lived here with his Greek wife Regina, had additions and alterations made to suit his taste. The initials of Ludwig von Würtzburg and Regina von Würtzburg can still be found on the wrought-iron gate at the castle entrance.

In the castle park, there is the burial chapel of Baron Edmund von Würtzburg, the only son of Ludwig von Würtzburg. Both father and son went to fight in World War I together, but only the father returned alive. His son died in his arms, and with him, the noble lineage in the male line. In memory of his son Edmund, Ludwig von Würtzburg built the burial chapel.

Later, the castle was inhabited by Mitwitz's honorary citizen, Baroness Anne-Marie von Cramer-Klett. To this day, the Upper Castle remains privately owned by the Cramer-Klett family.
