Historic Market Street um 1910
The market rights enabled Mitwitz to engage in trade.
The designation "Market" in Market Mitwitz is often no longer mentioned today. However, it was of great importance for a long time that Mitwitz was allowed to use this title. The market rights enabled Mitwitz to conduct trade. This not only brought prosperity—since merchants paid a fee—but it also allowed the local population to stock up on goods for daily needs. If finances allowed, luxury goods were also available from traveling merchants—everything that was not necessarily needed for survival at the time. The "Mimeze Market" and the historic market street on Kronacher Street attracted merchants from far and wide. It was not only an important hub for goods but also for news and rumors.
The local Jewish population was often involved in livestock and grain trading. Later, many of them sold goods such as tobacco, oil, knives, and fabrics. At the next stop, you can learn more about Jewish life in Mitwitz.
After World War II, the townscape was shaped not only by numerous basketry businesses and craftsmen but especially by retail shops. Up until the 1970s, shop businesses could be found in almost every second house along Kronacher Street and in neighboring streets of Mitwitz's town center.
Directly across from you on the other side of the street is the building at Kronacher Street 13. It was built in 1910 by Heinrich Bauer as a colonial goods store. Coffee, chocolate, and various products from former colonial areas were available for purchase. The store continued to operate as a grocery store until the 1970s. Today, the building houses the Sparkasse Kronach.
