Welcome to Adelsheim
Welcome to Adelsheim, a place steeped in stories and history. Adelsheim was already the seat of the noble family of the same name in the Middle Ages. In gratitude for their loyal service, Emperor Charles IV granted the town its charter in 1374. The tranquil settlement became the center of the Franconian Imperial Knights' Circle with annual markets, a court of law, and other important concessions under the protection of the emperor and the empire.
From your location, you can enjoy a particularly picturesque view to the right towards the castle park: there, the artificial Kirnau waterfall cascades magnificently and, thanks to night-time lighting, is a spectacle at any time of day.
Look across the intersection and you will see the traditional "Linde" inn. And on Rietstraße, directly behind you, is the listed district court with its stately façade. Another regional treasure is very close by: Germany's oldest active mailbox – and the oldest mailbox in Baden – is located here in Adelsheim. It has been receiving mail since the 19th century and connects people far beyond the city limits.
Speaking of borders... there used to be a state border here, as you can easily see from the nearby marker. Adelsheim's location on the border between Baden and Württemberg is particularly significant historically. Adelsheim changed allegiance several times in the course of history.
Originally a Baden town, Adelsheim briefly became Bavarian after Napoleon redrew the borders in 1803, and even more briefly Württemberg in 1805, until it finally became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806. It has been part of Baden-Württemberg since 1952.
Your route to the following stops will take you along Marktstraße again and again. Take note of the hand-forged arch lamps that give Adelsheim's Marktstraße a special flair.
Now enjoy your tour through beautiful Adelsheim with its varied history.
