Town hall & old school

You are now standing in the heart of Adelsheim, at the town hall – a building that is not only the seat of administration, but also bears witness to a rich and eventful history.

The inscription "A S 1619" on the northeast corner post is a reminder of its origins. The building we know today as the town hall was originally built by innkeeper Andreas Schleud as the "Zum güldenen Hirschen" inn. What was initially planned as a hostel for travelers and a resting place for mail coaches developed over the centuries into the hub of urban life.

Adelsheim has always been located on important transport routes. The Goldener Hirschen benefited from several postal routes – for example, to Würzburg, Heilbronn, and Öhringen. Stagecoaches and merchants stopped here on their journeys. News and goods made their way around the town. Two innkeepers even served as imperial-royal, and later grand-ducal-Baden postmasters. The building was thus a hub for the regional exchange of trade goods and news of all kinds.

In 1839, the municipality purchased the spacious building with a floor area of approximately 200 square meters and used it as an administrative center. A particular highlight is the beautiful half-timbered structure, which was uncovered and restored in 1924 when the 19th-century plaster was removed. On the gable end, you can see the so-called "Zwergwalm," a small triangular roof that breaks through the ridge – typical of buildings from the turn of the 16th to the 17th century in southwestern Germany.

Until the end of the 1990s, the old school building stood right next to the town hall. But the town grew, and the administration was given more and more new tasks. Eventually, it was demolished and the town hall was extended with a modern new building on this site. With its eventful history as an inn, post office, schoolhouse, and administrative building, the town hall became a symbol of constant change in Adelsheim.
