Military Officers' Club um 1985

Building No. 180 on the Sheridan Barracks grounds in Augsburg is a gem with an eventful history. The Nazis built it in the 1930s as an officers' mess hall to show off their power and style. The Americans took it over after the war and used it for their own purposes.
At first, it was reserved for American officers and their families for celebrations such as Independence Day, Veterans Day, or Thanksgiving. From the mid-1960s onwards, it also became a meeting place for American and German (Augsburg) fraternities and sororities, such as the Women's Club and Men's Club. At the same time, the officers' club was home to golfers and hikers (Marching Club) and served as the officers' hotel.
The casino impresses with its abundance of natural stone, oak wood, and marble. The ballroom is particularly impressive with its huge mural depicting a battle on the Lechfeld in 955. The Americans expanded the building and added a ballroom and a large kitchen.
In the basement, there were rustic drinking rooms with tiled stoves and drinking sayings on the walls. The entire building exudes a certain, albeit gloomy, grandeur. It bears the oppressive signature of the National Socialist regime. The Americans viewed this without judgment and felt particularly at home there, as reported by returning visitors from the US.
Today, the building is a listed historical monument, but unfortunately it stands empty and awaits future use.
