Tank road

Route from the barracks to the training area in Deuringen

This road once led directly from the barracks to the training area, which was located in the Deuringer Forest to the west. There was a separate gate at the barracks fence.

Because tanks also drove from the barracks to the training area, the road was called Panzerstraße (Tank Road). West of the B 17 federal highway, or in the area of the town of Stadtbergen, the road is still called Panzerstraße today.

The section of the road located in Sheridan Park has been called General-Cramer-Weg since 2007. This public road is named after Major General Kenneth Frank Cramer. He made extraordinary efforts to promote German-American friendship after World War II. The reason for his reconciliation with the Germans may have been his treatment in a German hospital at the end of World War I.

From December 1951 to November 1952, Cramer was general of the 43rd Infantry Division stationed in Augsburg. This division brought units of the U.S. National Guard to Augsburg for the first time. At the end of 1952, General Cramer was transferred to Heidelberg and left Augsburg.

The name of the Cramerton housing estate in Augsburg is also a reminder of Kenneth F. Cramer, who died unexpectedly in 1954.
