Planned by the German Wehrmacht as an emergency landing strip, the Americans used the huge open space, almost a kilometer long, for a variety of purposes.

1. Sports and fitness: The open spaces were often used for sporting activities to promote the physical fitness of the soldiers. This included various sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. Regular physical activity was an essential part of military training and helped to strengthen teamwork and cohesion among the soldiers.

2. Military exercises: The open spaces served as training grounds for military exercises and drills. Here, soldiers could practice their skills in various military disciplines, such as marching, formation training, and tactical exercises. These exercises were crucial for preparing for missions and maintaining operational readiness.

3. Parades and ceremonies: The open spaces were also the venue for official parades and military ceremonies. Such events were often held on special occasions, such as promotions, holidays, or the inauguration of new units. Parades promoted pride and discipline within the troops and allowed military traditions to be upheld.

4. Community events: In addition to military activities, the open spaces were also used for social events that strengthened the sense of community among soldiers and their families. These included parties, barbecues, and other recreational activities that helped make life in the barracks more enjoyable.

5. Emergency and evacuation drills: In some cases, the open spaces were also used for emergency drills and evacuation exercises to ensure that soldiers could respond quickly and effectively in the event of an emergency. 

Today, Allen Field is integrated into the outdoor facilities of the new Sheridan Quarters and is no longer recognizable as a whole.
