Sheridan Theater um 1985

One of many leisure activities available at the barracks

The theater was formerly called "Long Theater." It was a Nazi building and was converted into a cinema by the Americans. Such buildings were usually riding halls (cf. Reese Theater), but their use as economic buildings is questionable. It once belonged to the Kneußl Barracks with infantry and also had horse-drawn artillery. In front of it was always a large open space, which during the US era was used as a parking lot for the cinema and bowling alley.

In all barracks, the US troops set up leisure facilities such as EM clubs for enlisted personnel (Enlisted Men's Club), NCO clubs for non-commissioned officers (Non-Commissioned Officers' Club) or the Officers' Club (Sheridan) for officers. The buildings had large halls, a stage, bars, and kitchens, and the EMs and NCOs also had work booths for DJs. Even the basement rooms of the enlisted personnel buildings housed rehearsal rooms for rock and country bands. In addition, all three barracks had a theater, and the Sheridan barracks also had a bowling center.

Other leisure facilities included gyms, sports fields, and covered barbecue areas, as well as libraries, photo labs, and recreation centers. In Reese Barracks, this was housed in a Wehrmacht officers' mess (later the "abraxas" cultural center). The amateur theater group "Augsburg Community Theater" had a special reputation.
After the withdrawal of US troops, small and large entertainment rooms were discovered in the concrete-encased attics of many barracks buildings, where discos and bars had been operating. In this way, the respective units of a block created their own leisure and music venues with a remarkable atmosphere.
