The northern end of the Sheridan Barracks is located at the Westfriedhof tram stop. From there, the only view of the barracks was possible for the people of Augsburg.

While buildings, walls, or dense vegetation otherwise limited the view, the barracks fence on Stadtberger Straße provided an unobstructed view.

This was all the more interesting because the parking areas usually contained the latest military equipment.

According to reports, vehicles with diplomatic Soviet license plates were often seen in the Westfriedhof parking lot during such "shows."

When did the Americans leave Augsburg?

The withdrawal of US troops from Augsburg in 1998 was the result of several factors, mainly related to the end of the Cold War and the associated geopolitical changes:

• End of the Cold War The collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the dissolution of the Soviet Union led to a significant reduction in the military threat in Europe. This eliminated the need for a strong US military presence in Germany and other European countries.

• Restructuring of the US armed forces After the end of the Cold War, the US began to reduce and restructure its armed forces worldwide. This led to the closure of numerous military bases in Europe, including the one in Augsburg.

• Changing strategic priorities The US government shifted its strategic priorities from the defense of Europe to other regions of the world. This led to a reduction in the military resources allocated for deployment in Germany.

• German-American relations In the post-war years, the relationship between Germany and the US changed from one of occupation to one of partnership. Germany regained its sovereignty and became an important partner in NATO. The need for the permanent stationing of large military units was reduced.
