US Army Bars & Pubs um 1985
Get off tram line 2 at the Stadtberger Straße stop and you will find yourself in front of a former bar. This was a typical American bar and played an important role in connecting the barracks with the outside world. On the one hand, because it was very close to the barracks and thus became the “last chance” for soldiers who called themselves GIs (Government Issue) on their way home to the barracks. On the other hand, although there was a formal closing time for restaurants, it was almost never enforced in the “American quarter of Pfersee,” and so German beer and Goißa-Moss (beer, coke and schnapps) flowed until the morning.
Over the decades, there were dozens of US Army bars, “Gäästhouses,” and discotheques in the western districts. Until well into the 1970s, these were often ethnically segregated. White soldiers frequented different bars than black soldiers.
