Komödienhaus
Ah, there you are at last! Educated friends, welcome! Here in the Komödienhaus, the great day of 1761 unfolded!
Back then, the first performance of "The Tempest" in my translation took place. A way to elevate the German language and reshape literature.
But I must confess, nervousness gripped me like an invisible thread. I shudder when I look back, daring to translate Shakespeare.
But then, the moment arrived! "The Tempest" was performed in my translation – the first time a German Shakespeare graced a German stage. A play that honors not only art but also touches hearts. Here in the Komödienhaus, a place of joy and wonder.
It serves, besides the fine arts, an extremely, let's say, carnal purpose – that of a slaughterhouse. And there, where you see the balustrade, flows a town brook – conveniently, to dispose of the bloody filth – like someone philosophising about waking dreams. Literally "den Bach na" – down the brook. It seems to me a fitting place for a premiere, wouldn't you agree? Well then, let's go! Come, the stage awaits us!
