Maintenance & Repair Hall 1945

Hall 116 has a very eventful past. Built in the 1930s as part of the air intelligence barracks, it became a camp for forced laborers in the last year of the war. After a bombing raid on another concentration camp satellite camp, 1,500 to 2,000 prisoners were housed here for about a year. Conditions were catastrophic, and many died.
After the war, the Americans took over the barracks and Hall 116 became "Building 116." Initially, the hall was used by various military units, but in the 1960s it became a motor pool for tanks.

In 1971, the Consolidated Maintenance Center (CMC) moved in, the technical maintenance operation for barracks, warehouses, residential complexes, and private equipment. Anything that was defective could be repaired by the CMC. Over the decades, German employees replaced the soldiers. However, the CMC was always ultimately managed by a soldier.
After the Americans withdrew, Hall 116 became a memorial site commemorating the building's dark past. Today, it hosts exhibitions that shed light on the history of the concentration camp satellite camp and the more than 50-year presence of the Americans in Augsburg. The New America House is a private initiative of two non-profit associations, the AIA (America in Augsburg) and ACFA (American Car Friends Augsburg), which are dedicated to documenting the US presence in Augsburg. To this end, the city of Augsburg provided them with approximately 800 square meters of space in building 116 free of charge for exhibition purposes. These can be viewed at fixed times or on demand.
